Grown since the 16th century on the plateau of Lamon and now the synonym of top quality bean, the spagnolèt bean is one of the four varieties grown by the small farmers in the highlands and are marked with protected designation of origin (PDO).
They are large and round, an off-white colour with bright red streaks and the variety is highly popular due to its properties and delicate flavour. They are perfect for salads, hors d’oeuvres and as side dishes. The Lamon Bean has some of the highest protein content for a bean. 23 grams of protein in a serving of just less than 2 ounces.
These heirloom beans have traditionally been grown around the village of Lamon in the Dolomite moutains in northern Veneto. Later they were transplanted to the provice of Cuneo in Piermonte where they grow in vine form. These Lamon beans have a robust round form and a thin and easily-digestible skin.
This bean has quite a history. Given as Papal gifts in the 14th century, these beans were considered quite sacred. Now you don't have to wait for the Pope to gift you these beans, just order and enjoy.
